The Highest Mountain - Mount Everest

Mount Everest – also called Sagarmāthā (Nepali: सगरमाथा), Chomolungma or Qomolangma or Zhumulangma (Chinese: 珠穆朗玛峰 Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng) – is the highest mountain on Earth, and the highest point on the Earth's continental crust, as measured by the height above sea level of its summit, 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia, is located on the border between Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal, and Tibet, China.

In 1856, the Great Trigonometric Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 29,002 ft (8,840 m). In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon recommendation of Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India at the time. Chomolungma had been in common use by Tibetans for centuries, but Waugh was unable to propose an established local name because Nepal and Tibet were closed to foreigners.




The highest mountain in the world attracts climbers of all levels, from well experienced mountaineers to novice climbers willing to pay substantial sums to professional mountain guides to complete a successful climb. The mountain, while not posing substantial technical climbing difficulty on the standard route (other eight-thousanders such as K2 or Nanga Parbat are much more difficult), still has many inherent dangers such as altitude sickness, weather and wind. By the end of the 2008 climbing season, there had been 4,102 ascents to the summit by about 2,700 individuals. Climbers are a significant source of tourist revenue for Nepal, whose government also requires all prospective climbers to obtain an expensive permit, costing up to US $ 25,000 per person. Everest has claimed 210 lives, including eight who perished during a 1996 storm high on the mountain. Conditions are so difficult in the death zone that most corpses have been left where they fell. Some of them are visible from standard climbing routes.

World's Highest Railway: Qinghai – Tibet railway

The first trains were flagged onto the Qinghai-Tibet Railway line, the world's highest railway
line connecting the Tibetan capital Lhasa with Golmud in Qinghai,
China. At its highest point in the Tanggula Pass, the railway line
reaches an altitude of 5072 metres.



The line is designed for travel at speeds of 100 km/h on frozen ground
to 120 km/h on non-frozen ground. The cabins are supplied with oxygen
because of the thin air at the high altitudes. The windows have
ultra-violet filters to keep out the sun's glare. Cooling pipes have
been used to ensure the ground remains frozen.



Air trips to Tibet are expensive and road trips slow and dangerous.
Three trains, each carrying 900 passengers are scheduled to run daily
along the line. The basic tickets cost 389 yuan to go from Beijing to
Lhasa. The trip should take just under 48 hours. According to state
television the tickets for the inaugural trip sold out within 10
minutes.



Speaking
at the flagging-off ceremony in front of the Golmud railway station,
the Chinese President Hu Jintao said, "The project is not only a
magnificent feat in China's history of railway construction, but is also
a great miracle of the world's railroad history,"



The Chinese government states that it spent more than US$95 million
reducing the environmental damage of this railway. Passengers will not
be able to open the windows of the train to litter. There will be a
rubbish train to pick up refuse from various sites along the line.



Critics claim that the railway will be used to assert control over Tibet
as the line can quickly transport Chinese troops to Tibet during
unrest.






They also claim that the railway will damage both the environment and
the culture of Tibet. Tibet is home to many endangered species such as
the Tibetan antelope.



On Friday, 3 women from the United States, Canada, and Britain were
detained for displaying a banner saying "China's Tibet Railway, Designed
to Destroy" at Beijing's main station.









"It's the first direct, low-cost, quick, and easy way for migrants to
arrive in central Tibet. This will lead to the overwhelming of Tibetans
and competition for scarce jobs. The eventual idea is the dilution of
Tibetan language, culture and identity," said Lhadon Tethong, executive
director of the New York-based Students for a Free Tibet.



"The railway line itself is not a cause of concern for the Tibetan
people," said Thupten Samphel, spokesman for the Dalai Lama's government
in exile. "How it will be used is the main concern."



"Despite the rosy economic forecasts and dire predictions of Chinese
control, the train is unlikely to touch off social disaster or
commercial windfall," said Andrew Fischer, an economics researcher at
the London School of Economics.



"When the railroad opens the commercial service and more people move in
and out of the region, I think it will be good for the outside world to
know more about Tibetan culture," Zhu, the railway official, said. "No
culture can develop and thrive in a closed environment."

Angel Falls or Kerepakupai merú (which means "waterfall of the deepest place", in Pemon language, or: "Parakupa-vena", which means "the fall from the highest point"; Spanish: Salto Ángel) is the world's highest waterfall, with a height of 979 m (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 m (2,647 ft). The waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain in the Canaima National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima), a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State, Venezuela.

The height of the falls is so great that before getting anywhere near the ground, the water is atomized by the strong winds and turned into mist. The mist can be felt a mile away. The base of the falls feeds into the Kerep River (alternatively known as the Río Gauya), which flows into the Churun River, a tributary of the Carrao River.

The height figure 3,212 feet (979 m) mostly consists of the main plunge but also includes about 0.25 miles (400 m) of shallowly sloped cascades and rapids below the drop and a 100-foot (30 m) high plunge downstream of the talus rapids. While the main plunge is undoubtedly the highest single drop in the world, including the lower cascades somewhat stretches the criteria for the measurement of waterfalls. Some other waterfalls, such as Yosemite Falls in North America, also include intermediary cascades in their height figures, but, in the case of Yosemite Falls, the middle cascades are much steeper and have less run than those of Angel Falls.

In the indigenous Pemon language Kerepakupai merú means 'waterfall of the deepest place'. The falls are sometimes referred to as Churún-merú, an error, since that name corresponds to another waterfall in the Canaima National Park. Churún in the Pemon language means "thunder".

The waterfall was known for most of the twentieth century by the named 'Angel Falls' after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who was the first to fly over the falls in a plane. According to the British newspaper, The Guardian,President Hugo Chávez announced his intention to change the name to "Kerepakupai Merú" in 2009, on the grounds that the nation's most famous landmark should bear an indigenous name. Explaining the name change, President Hugo Chavez was reported to have said, "This is ours, long before Angel ever arrived there...this is indigenous property." However on December 23rd, President Chávez clarified that he will not decree the change of name, but only was defending the use of Kerepakupai merú.

Angel Falls (Kerepakupai merú) is one of Venezuela's top tourist attractions, but, even today, a trip to the falls is a complicated affair. The falls are located in an isolated jungle region of Venezuela, and a flight from Caracas or Ciudad Bolívar is required to reach Canaima camp, the starting point for river trips to the base of the falls. River trips generally take place from June to December, when the rivers are deep enough for the wooden curiaras used by the Pemon guides. During the dry season (December to March) there is less water seen than in the other months.

An alternative possibility is to purchase a package that includes an aerial flyby of the falls. However, since the falls cannot be seen on cloudy days, there is no guarantee visitors will see them from the air.

5 Highest Bungee Jumps in the World

Bungee jumping (also spelled "Bungy" jumping) is an activity that involves jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord. The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building, bridge or crane; but it is also possible to jump from a movable object, such as a hot-air-balloon or helicopter, that has the ability to hover above the ground. The thrill comes as much from the free-falling as from the rebounds.

When the person jumps, the cord stretches and the jumper flies upwards again as the cord snaps back, and continues to oscillate up and down until all the energy is dissipated.

The zany chaps from Britain’s Dangerous Sports Club made the first modern bungee jump from Bristol’s 245-foot (75 m) Clifton Suspension in 1979. Yet since bungee jumping became commercial at the hands of elastic-thinking New Zealand entrepreneur A J Hackett, the heights from which the man on the street can now leap with nothing but a giant rubber band attached to his ankles have just got bigger. 5. Europabrücke Bridge, Austria – 630 feet (192 m)

Standing 630 feet (192 m) high, and supporting the Brenner Autobahn that links Austria and Italy across the Alps, the Europabrücke Bridge was Europe’s highest from 1963 until it was topped out by France’s Millau Viaduct in 2004. Make no mistake, though: just standing on the edge of this structure, let alone thinking about jumping from it, would be enough to make many feel sick with giddiness.


Once you’ve had those ties wrapped securely round your ankles, it’s a quick look at the alpine panorama around you and then a leap off the launch platform, your face turning to stretched rubber as the floor of the Wipp valley rushes towards you, before the bungee finally kicks in, leaving you bouncing like a rag doll on a piece of string – albeit a very grateful one.

4. Bloukrans Bridge, South Africa – 708 feet (216 m)

The world’s highest single span arch bridge, the Bloukrans Bridge towers 708 feet (216 m) above the river of the same name. Primarily a road bridge, the Bloukrans also hosts a beast of a bungee jump – the highest commercially operated on earth for years after it was opened in 1997. With its pendulum system, apparently you get “the smoothest, most comfortable bungy jump possible”. Nice to know.
Once you’ve been led across a custom designed catwalk that hangs beneath the N2 national route road surface, taking you to the top of the arch, it’s time to get your final instructions – and maybe mutter some final prayers. Then it’s a quick countdown amidst stunning surrounds, and away you go, plummeting through the air, with the water of Bloukrans River looming large in a matter of seconds.

3. Verzasca Dam, Switzerland – 720 feet (220 m)

Just looking at this picture is enough to give you vertigo. That dam face just keeps going down, down, down – hopefully not to damnation if you’re freefalling down its face. The Verzasca hydroelectric dam, completed in 1965, soars 720 feet (220 m) above Lago di Vogorno, the reservoir it forms. Oh, and its apex is also the site of a heart-stopping commercial bungee jump.
Featured in the opening sequence of the Bond movie Goldeneye, the Verzasca dam offers a pure freefall swinging bungee from a single cord, similar to the one that swings you down from the Bloukrans Bridge. Apparently this jump is made without guide ropes, but jump masters are there to ensure you’re safe as you hurtle towards the base of this colossal concrete structure.

2. Macau Tower, China – 760 feet (233 m)

Measuring 1,109 feet (338 m) from tip to toe, the Macau Tower dwarfs the former Portuguese colony of Macau, where it was completed in 2001. In 2006, bungee jumping guru A J Hackett launched what the Guinness Book of Records recognised as the highest commercial bungee jump in the world, performing the leap himself from the same spot as his ’skyjump’, which was opened the year before.
Although at 760 feet (233 m) just a fraction taller than its Swiss rival to the crown, and perhaps not as scenic as some of the other jumps here, the drop from the Macau Tower definitely isn’t to be sneered at. What’s more, when you’ve thrown yourself into the abyss, plunging straight for the city floor, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about such trifling concerns. More important things to think about.

1. Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado, USA – 1,053 feet (321 m)

Fortunate to be numero uno this one, with the bungee jump only available in the Go Fast Games of 2005 and 2007 – but the best things come to those who wait. An attraction since 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge hangs 1,053 feet (321 m) aloft and is billed as the highest suspension bridge in the world. Add rickety wooden planks with cracks you can see straight down between and dizzying wouldn’t be the word.
With the Arkansaw River running along the base of the gorge, this rare bungee jump is a beauty, and edging along its platform it takes some beating for fear factor too. Says jumper Larry Gottlieb: “Those last few inches feel like a mile. Then… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… jump! …At first, there was a feeling of falling, but very quickly I reached terminal velocity of about 110 mph. After that, it felt like floating – just wonderful.” Nuff said.

The World's Highest Building BASE Jump



The “BASE” in “BASE jumping
stands for Buildings, Antennas, Spans (i.e. bridges) and Earth (i.e.
cliffs). Therefore, to do the world’s highest BASE jump off a building,
you need to be leaping off the world’s newest tallest building. So Nasr
Al Niyadi and Omar Al Hegelan lept off the Burj Khalifa, 672 meters (2,204 feet) from the ground. This video shows the jump:







 



























About The BASE Jump



Instead of a ripcord, BASE jumpers release their pilot chute manually.
For higher jumps, the pilot chute is stowed in an easily accessible
pocket or flap, and the jumper pulls it free to release it at the right
moment. This leaves both hands free during the brief freefall. If the
jump is shorter, the jumper usually just holds the pilot chute in his or
her hand.

For jumps 300 feet or lower, BASE jumpers have almost no time at all to
freefall and deploy a chute. They use a static line to deploy the chute
automatically. This line runs from the jumper's pack to the object.
During the jump, this line pulls the main chute open, and then separates
from the pack.





Skydivers
don't have to worry about object proximity. They have to worry about
hitting the ground, not the side of a building or cliff. But most BASE
jumping fatalities are due to object impacts, rather than freefalling to
the ground. The need for fast parachute deployments compounds the
problem -- these deployments can send the jumper off into an unintended
direction, such as straight into a granite wall. Jumpers call this an
"off-heading opening."



Jumpers try to compensate by using a smaller ram-air parachute, one with
seven air cells instead of nine. Modern parachutes designed
specifically for BASE jumping have started to incorporate modified
sliders that ease the suddenness of deployment, making it easier to
avoid an off-heading opening.



Body position at the jump and deployment are key factors in determining
the success of a jump. Jumping head first and rotating forward is
incorrect. Keeping the body oriented so that the jumper is facing down,
with the chute deploying behind him, is vital. On jumps with a few
seconds of freefall, jumpers use tracking to direct the body away from
the object. This means that the jumper "flies" away from the object
using the aerodynamic shape of the body, instead of just falling
straight down.



Canopy skills are vital as well. Once a ram-air parachute has deployed,
the jumper may be carrying a great deal of forward velocity. Being able
to steer properly and avoid slamming into the object could literally be
the difference between life and death.
